Hi, as a teacher, I found it frustrating that children were being taught lots of mathematical thinking and how to work in lots of different ways whilst the arithmetic skills underpinning the thinking were being largely ignored. I have written this work book especially for children who struggle with the 'why' because they haven't quite grasped the 'how' yet.
The PDF format means that you can print off one exercise at a time and work through the book at your child's own pace.
How it Works
Each level is split into four sections:
Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division.
Within each section, ten topics are covered - e.g. fractions or shape or time.
Addition and its ten topics are studied first, followed by subtractions, then multiplication and finally division.
Each section begins with a short skills test. Work through the skills test with your child to ensure that they are using the method of calculation prescribed.
The ten topical exercises are then studied. These put the skills into context of algebra, measures, time, shapes, fractions and map reading as well as real life problem solving and working with money.
There is a final assessment at the end of the book so that you can see which areas may need more work before moving on to the next level.
The levels relate to the arithmetic involved in answering the questions in the exercises. As children move up the levels, they learn new arithmetic skills which build on the foundations laid in the previous levels.
